چکیده

Bathymetry on continental hydrographic networks is up to now limited to small areas. This hampers exhaustive hydrological or ecological studies on hydrographic networks at management scales. To enlarge rivers bathymetry surveys, bathymetric, i.e. green LiDAR appears as an interesting tool. But if this technique has been widely used for coastal surveys, very few studies focus on water depth measurement quality and limits, in particular for rivers and for very shallow waters. We aimed here to assess the utility of LiDAR for bathymetry on rivers, in particular the minimum water depth Hinf we can theoretically measure with LiDAR, depending on LiDAR system and surface water characteristics. To meet this goal, we developed a LiDAR wavecform model depending on LiDAR parameters and introducing specificities for rivers (roughness and longitudinal slope for the water surface). Then, we assessed from a set of simulated full waveforms the inferior limit Hinf. In case of mean water surface roughness and no longitudinal slope, a minimum water depth of Hinf = 0.41 m has been found with the 95 % confidence interval [0.31, 0.45]. Some additional tests using different water surfaces rugosities show that a lowly significant rugosity optimum exists. These first results have to be experimentally validated then it could be extended to study the minimum water depth or depth measure quality sensitivities to LiDAR system and water surface parameters.

Performance Assessment of High Resolution Airborne Full Waveform LiDAR for Shallow River Bathymetry

We evaluate the performance of full waveform LiDAR decomposition algorithms with a high-resolution single band airborne LiDAR bathymetry system in shallow rivers. A continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) is proposed and applied in two fluvial environments, and the results are compared to existing echo retrieval methods. LiDAR water depths are also compared to independent field measurements. In...

A State of Art on Airborne Lidar Application in Hydrology and Oceanography: a Comprehensive Overview

Nowadays, lidar has been accepted as one of the important sensors providing accurate and dense 3D point cloud from earth surface terrain and water bathymetry. The basic idea of using lidar stems from the problem of measuring water depth without direct contacting with the water body or without any instrument mounted on the water surface in shallow regions. Bathymetric lidar that uses two differe...

Improved Model for Depth Bias Correction in Airborne LiDAR Bathymetry Systems

Airborne LiDAR bathymetry (ALB) is efficient and cost effective in obtaining shallow water topography, but often produces a low-accuracy sounding solution due to the effects of ALB measurements and ocean hydrological parameters. In bathymetry estimates, peak shifting of the green bottom return caused by pulse stretching induces depth bias, which is the largest error source in ALB depth measurem...

River bathymetry from conventional LiDAR using water surface returns

LiDAR–based DEMs are almost essential when it comes to high resolution floodplain modelling. Conventional LiDAR does not penetrate water bodies and additional bathymetric measurements are necessary to complete any parts of a DEM which were under water at the time of the LiDAR sortie. Bathymetric data collection is time-consuming, expensive and it requires careful processing to correctly interpo...

Shallow Water Measurements Using a Single Green Laser Corrected by Building a Near Water Surface Penetration Model

To reduce the size and cost of an integrated infrared (IR) and green airborne LiDAR bathymetry (ALB) system, and improve the accuracy of the green ALB system, this study proposes a method to accurately determine water surface and water bottom heights using a single green laser corrected by the near water surface penetration (NWSP) model. The factors that influence the NWSP of green laser are li...
